of the witnesses. As soon as she thought of that scheme, it seemed so obvious. Pete hadn’t killed Kyle, but he was involved, aiding and abetting the people who had performed the gangland execution with Pete’s own gun.

There was only one way she could find the truth: talk to Pete himself. If she confronted him directly, Maggie didn’t think he’d lie to her. Or, if he did, she could tell.

She would see the deceit in his eyes and his manner.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t a bit of information she was ready to share with Travis. Not just yet.

She returned to Roy’s office.

“I need to ask you a favor,” she said.

“Can you give me a lift over to Parish Prison?”

His eyebrows pinched with worry.

“You’re not supposed to leave this floor. Remember what happened the last time?”

“This if different,” she said.

“I’m going to the prison.

It’s full of guards. What could happen to me at the prison? “

“I don’t like it. Why do you need to go?”

She didn’t even have to think twice about this little fib.

“My car,” she said.

“Travis screwed up, didn’t tell the cops it was okay for me to park in the Parish Prison lot.

If I don’t pick up the car, the police will impound my vehicle. “

A sneaky gleam lit Roy’s eyes.

“Travis screwed up.”

“Yes, he did. And I’m plenty mad about it.” She smiled sweetly.

“Please, Roy. Give me a ride over there, me inside, and I’ll take care of things from there.”

“Okay.”

At Parish Prison, it was easier said than done for Maggie to arrange for her own private interview with Pete, but official in charge recognized her from when she’d there with Travis. Maggie pushed until she got her way.

When Pete shuffled into the from, she was shocked by his appearance. He had a huge shiner on his left eye. There were bruises on his left forearm.

“What happened? Oh, Pete, who did this to you?”

Sullenly, he glanced toward the guard.

“I slipped and fell down.”

“Don’t you even start to tell me those lies,” she warned.

“I know a beating when I see one. Was it the police?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Maggie.”

“Why? Who beat you?”

He painfully lowered his skinny body into the chair opposite her at the plain wooden table. He didn’t even ask to have his cuffs removed, just sat there. His weary eyes were dull.

Outrage fired through Maggie’s soul. How could this happen? As soon as she asked herself, she knew the answer.

People were hurt all the time in jail. It was a violent place, filled with violent criminals.

“Did you go by my apartment?” he asked.

“Yes, I did. And I have never laid eyes upon such a pigsty in my entire life.”

When Pete grinned, he winced. A groan escaped his lips.

Maggie couldn’t stand to be here, seeing his bruises, wishing desperately that she could help him.

“Pete, I want for you to tell me about Total Com

“You broke into my computer,” he said.

“Well, of course I did. I’m investigating. And I remembered all that stuff you told me aboat it so I could access your files.
